Walking Your Dog at Max Starcke Park

Max Starcke Park, at 1400 S Guadalupe St, is the obvious answer to “where do I walk my dog in Seguin,” and for most dogs it’s a good one. The park runs 227 acres along the Guadalupe River, and the parts that matter for a walk are the river-side trail, the open grounds around the disc golf course, and Barky Park, the town’s fenced dog park sitting near the West entrance.

The walking trail

The trail follows the river through shaded sections and open picnic areas, past the paddling put-in and a natural fishing area. It’s flat and wide enough for two people with dogs to pass comfortably, which matters more than it sounds, since Max Starcke also draws golfers, disc golf players, and families using the playscape and Little League fields. A leash under 6 feet keeps things predictable when the trail gets busy on weekends.

Barky Park

If your dog does better off-leash in a controlled space, Barky Park is a fenced, double-gated dog park inside Max Starcke Park West, split into separate sections for small and large breeds. It has water, benches, and shade, which is not a given at every fenced dog park in a hot-summer town. It’s not a walking trail itself, but it pairs well with one, a lap of the river trail followed by 15 minutes of off-leash time before heading home.

What doesn’t work as well here

The 18-hole golf course and the tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts are active-use areas, not walking space. Steer clear of the fairways even if a dog on-leash technically fits between them. And because Max Starcke is a genuinely large, multi-use park, a first visit is easier if you park near the West entrance (closest to Barky Park and the river trail) rather than wandering in from a random lot.
